A visual treat amidst the Adriatic Sea, A photographer’s dream is to capture the vibrant colors ,A painter’s creation to make it world famous.

Burano Murano

While in Venice …what you do, of course, Rome…no no you Roam ..and enjoy the ” Sweetness of doing Nothing”
Eat, explore, relax, and explore.
Venice is a Lagoon surrounded by islands and once done exploring Venice. . the next thing is ISLAND hopping
Bridges connect these islands. Comprised of a cluster of seven islands, the most famous, Murano is famous for its glass making. This place is all over the internet and catches every tourist’s eye, with its brightly painted houses.

Island Hopping on the cards

The islands are linked by bridges over multiple canals. This spectacular architectural marvel came to fame some 700 years ago when glassmakers were moved to Murano from the populated Venice as the fires from the furnaces of the glassmakers started becoming hazardous for the then densely populated Venice.

Famous for its glass-making

Known for its fine artistry in glass making, its special glass-blowing techniques, which have been fine-tuned over the centuries while keeping the originality intact, are fascinating to watch.

The journey of this intricate yet aesthetic product and process is documented and showcased at the Murano Glass Museum located at the residence of the local bishop for centuries, also called the Gothic Plaza.

Murano also hosts one of the oldest churches in the Venetian lagoon, a Roman architectural gem amongst many. The Church of SAN Donato stands on the edge of a canal, overlooking the water, and is quite a sight.

Burano

11km from Venice …these islands are at a hopping distance with the water taxis. The locals are old settlers and happy to indulge with the tourists. The vibe at the island is very chill and relaxed.

Most Instagramable Spots

IMG 20250206 WA0030This island is a photographer’s dream and one of my travels’ most Instagram-able spots. Bepi Sua, a former cinema projectionist’s house, is on our list as the house is very vibrantly painted among the many.

Splash of colors

IMG 20250206 WA0031 1You wander around amidst the brightest red, pink, purple, and yellow. The locals are pleased to share the reason for painting the houses so bright…this is done so that the fishermen at the sea when they are coming back home, can easily locate the vibrant colors on a day when the island is densely covered with fog … brilliant. It’s solved so many purposes.

The local shops showcase the hand-made products made on the island. Laces from Burano are famous worldwide.

The lace history dates back to the kings and queens’ era. The intricacy of each enhances the outfit it adorns. As the women at these local boutiques talk, their hands are at work. Without looking at what they are weaving, they are creating some masterpieces.

Visiting the lace factory at the Burano School of Piazza Galappi, this visual treat is mind-boggling.

A treat to your senses

colourful glass object picsThe streets here are lined up with boutiques and cafes. The boutique’s exquisite display of merchandise at these expensive islands forces you to shop for locally created articles, making you lose your euros.

The day at Muranoooo and Buranoooo, that’s the way the locals call it…. yes, after a successful island hopping day with the Vaporetto’s at service, the islands are worth a visit.

Way of Life at the Oceans Edge

I loved the alleys on the canals lined up with boats, as their usual vehicle, the canals having an opening in the vast expanse of the sea …

As my vaporetto takes me back to Venice, I leave a little piece of me on the islands which makes me wonder, as to how commuting happened 700 years ago.

How did the locals stay in touch with the other island, understanding that the ways must be the oldest after roadways?

The culture of these islands is very set. With tourists or without, they continue to live life-size.

Life on the Islands I  found was peaceful, and a wristwatch is just a fashion accessory, wearing it and yet not looking at it is the activity here

What do you enjoy the Most
I enjoyed the most is
-Strolling the cobbled streets
– Learning the Art of Glass and lace-making

–  listen to stories from the locals
– see the Artists at work
– Drink wine or coffee all the time
– Using vaperattos  ..fastest mode.
– listening and learning the Italians  speak
– window dressings of the boutique in the oldest Venice house.
